Set off on a 5-minute ride from my hotel to the ferry at Ulee Lheue to Pulau Weh, a 2-hour trip. Figuring out how to take the ferry was no small task - it was hard to get clear info that made sense, as it doesn't run at the same time every day. Even the ferry company's online support couldn't give me a clear answer. The hotel staff sourced it from the Instragram account of Dishub Aceh, a government portal.
When I first come to Indonesia in 1991, one of the best and most memorable places I visited was Weh. So was pretty excited to be going back. Fortunately, it has not changed much; it's still a sleepy, clean, colonial-era town, maybe one of the nicest in the country. As the entry point to the Straights of Malacca, you see many large ships steaming by in the distance. Apparently, it was once a bigger port than Singapore.
As I wanted to go diving, I rode around the island to Lumba Lumba Dive Resort at Pahang Beach, a really nice place to stay, super chill, great people, and clean living as there is no/little alcohol available. Did 4 dives over 2 days. Read and see more here.
One "little" nugget during my stay: while wildlife in Sumatra tends to be on the larger side, I saw the tiniest frogs you can imagine. After it had been raining for hours, the ground was crawling with what I thought were tiny insects - but it turned out they were frogs.
