Laos: Luang Namtha > Muang Xai

Nov 11-12 2022 |

A good intro to the mountain roads in Northern Laos: up and down; little traffic; great views; hill-tribe villages. One thing quickly struck me in Laos: the lack of forest cover, especially compared to Thailand, where logging was banned yonks ago. Laos has sporadic forest, I am guessing due to a combination of: slash and burn agriculture; logging; and extreme bombing (the US dropped more bombs on Laos than on Europe in WW2).

Stayed one night in Muang Xai, aka Odoumxai, a decent little town. Got an room for $6 in a great heritage guesthouse that was extremely well-designed with stained hardwood everything.

For the next destination, a big decision had to be made, whether to head south to Luang Prabang, or sideways on The North East Loop, a newly promoted and little-travelled route.

Ride: 116 km | 3 hrs

Stay: Villa Keoseumsack | $6 | 4/5
