This leg is where the real action kicked in, some really superb scenery and exciting riding. A big chunk of the ride was along the Salween river separating Thailand and Myanmar. And it was the start of Hill Tribe country.
Mae Sariang is a great place. Not many tourists here. It's one of the four main stops on the Mae Hong Son loop, a famous motorcycle trip around NW Thailand, a trip I first did in 1992 on a Honda Cub 90. Though I don't remember visiting Mae Sariang in 1992, it appears the place has not changed drastically.
As I pulled into the Riverhouse guesthouse, another rider was arriving on a non-rental enduro bike, with some of the similar gear, including Mosko Reckless 40 bags, Klim riding gear, and exactly the same Klim socks! Stuart, a Scot who lives in Mae Sot (rhymes) and Thailand for 15+ years, showed me a great restaurant and bar, places I doubt I would come across - a great connect. There were a number of riders in town, including a group on rental V-Strom 650s.
Stayed two nights at Riverside Hotel, a traditional Thai teak building. It was more expensive than I had been paying elsewhere, but it was worth it.
Ride: 235km | 4.5hrs
Stay: Riverhouse Hotel (booked on Agoda) | $34/n | 4/5
