Malaysia: Malacca > Cameron Highlands

Oct 14-15 2022 |

Malacca done, Cameron Highlands next up, for some colonial-era cool (literally) R&R.

When I first looked at this ride, it longer than I wanted to do - about 6.5 hours. Freeway was a faster option, but I wasn't keen to subject myself to Malaysia's crazy drivers, and wanted to experience some of the better riding routes in the north. RiderChris, sourced on Google proved to be a great source of Malaysia route and riding tips, and I followed his suggest route from Bentong to Cameron.

After my roti chanai fix, I headed off on the dreaded Malacca-KL freeway route, seeking to get it over and done with ASAP, and to keep my life intact. Next, the off-freeway part of the drive, from Bentong was nice, a decent initial introduction to Malaysia mountain roads.

Cameron Highlands was a hugely different scene than "lowland" Malaysia: cool, wet, foggy. The sweater I almost didn't bother to pack was a lifesaver, as it was downright cold after dark. Lot's of riders, some huge groups on Sunday, like the massive group of Malay ladies I met at a viewpoint (pic below).

Route: Malacca>KL (bypass)>Bentong>Cameron Highlands

Kms: 387 / Duration: 6 hours

Stay: Booked a room on Agoda that turned out to be upstairs from the bar I was drinking a Guiness in - very convenient.
