So I decided to go east, rather than south. And the amazing ride and entry into Nong Khiaw proved I made the right decision. Mountain roads, little traffic, hill tribe villages, amazing vistas. It was also an intro to just how poor and developing Laos is, with many of sightings of kids doing manual labour such as carry baskets of sticks, as shown in pic below. And many tiny kids, 2-5 years old playing or walking on the side of the road - not safe at all.
Nong Khiaw was an incredible place, a great intro to Laos, especially compared to the prior two towns I stayed at, Luang Namtha and Muang Xai. Nong Khiaw is an undiscovered gem on the SE Asia tourist trail, and sure to soon rise as a destination. The setting of the town is amazing, and there's lots to do around there - hiking, boating, villages, and just chill and enjoy the view. I climbed the peak, and it was well worth it (though excruciating). No fancy accomodation or restaurants in Nong Khiaw, expenses are low. Highly recommended for the moto traveller, or anyone looking for a diversion from Luang Prabang.
