Laos: Pakse > 4000 Islands

Laos | Nov 30 - Dec 5

After 3 weeks in Laos, the final stop at Don Det in the 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don) was a major, if not the, highlight of the stay in the country. This is another one of those amazing gems of a place in Laos, not exactly well known or on the tourist trail.

The 4000 Islands is an area of rapids on the Mekong. And as with all things Mekong, it is not small scale, ranging from sheer water volume and width as the widest waterfall on the planet, to the cockamamie colonial French attempt to build a railway to bypass the rapids.

Don Det, the smaller of two tourist islands, is a great place to chill out, the start or exit point to/from Cambodia, 20km to the border). Cheap, fun, friendly English-speaking locals, dolphins (yes). It's a whole different world compared to the north of the country. Interestingly, the place also has a restaurant serving Poutine, "Quebec's gift to the world".

Getting my bike there was also an adventure, requiring a unique ferry trip.

Ride: 142 km | 2 hrs

Stay: Mama Leurth Guesthouse | $14 | 5/5
