Departing Savannaket, I discovered a major error with Google Maps (which had been wonky in Laos, no big suprise). According to Google the trip was going to be 4 hours. According to maps.me, it was closer to 2 hours - and that turned out to be correct. I guess Google is basing it's timing on "typical" Laos roads? But this road was in excellent condition - straight and fast. Roads in the south of Laos are incredibly better than in the north.
So on to Pakse, with a plan to stay one night, then do the short version of the Bolavean or Southern Loop, the country's 3rd renowned motorcycle route. Had a decent stay, good hotel with cable and world cup, excellent pie at Pizza Trattoria, joined the celebration at a new bar and surprisingly friendly and social locals, and ate a great breakfast at an authentic French bakery (Camembert baguette). Was the first and only time I saw beggars in Laos.
