Departed Sihanoukville on to Koh Kong, another long and fairly dull ride on mostly crappy roads. Koh Kong is officially known as Krong Kemara Phoumin, which no one seems to ever refer to it as, and the town is named after Koh Kong island, the largest in Cambodia, which is controlled by the military and off-limits. Most tourists here are transiting through the Thai border just outside town. I stayed 2 nights, not much to do here, not a bad thing. Highlights were multiple meals at I Love Pizza, where the chef Vottorio makes some of the best pizza and pasta in Asia, and an afternoon at Young, Wild, and Free, a beach bungalow joint that is justifiably gaining a reputation as an "it" place in Cambodia. Both are highly recommended. Stayed at Apex Guesthouse, also very good. Had a breakfast convo with a French (Foreign Legion type) guy who has lived in the area for 15 years, currently on a small island, and he explained how corrupt sand dredging for the Singapore construction market had destroyed the local ecosystem, with the prawn, crab, shellfish fisheries having disappeared as a result. Another highlight was watching Ivana, a South African teacher and talented artist based in Phnom Penh, paint the beach scene over the course of the afternoon - really impressive.
Ride: 233 km | 3.5 hrs
