Sumba: Rua Beach > Waingapu

Indonesia | Oct 2024 |

Section 2 of my ride in Sumba, from the beach and surfing area in Rua to Waingapu, the major city in the east of the island, via the scenic center of the island.

After a great 2 days in Rua (that could have easily continued), I set out for Waingapu, on what appears to be the only main road. This was a nice ride, through a national park. The topography changed pretty dramatically, up from the dry coast, into an extended section of jungle, then into an arid landscape with little or no foilage as you get nearer to Waingapu.

The last section of the ride is impressive, you ride on top of a plateau that then comes to the coast. Wainagapu is at the bottom of the road. And the views to the east are epic, lumpy brown hills with no tree cover.

Wainagapu was a great stop. The largest city in Sumba, it is not a major tourist destination.

There was huge range of fish for sale all around the port - maybe too much, I hate to think how much may go to waste. Though I choose fish less these days due my part-time career as a dive pro, I had an incredibly delicious slice of BBQ'd snapper.

I stayed at Tanto Hotel, a newish local-style traveler hotel, great value, quiet and comfortable.

Ride: 146 km / 4 hrs

Stay: Tanto Hotel $20 ****
