Decision of day was to ride short two hours to Thakhek, or a bone-numbing six hours further south. Read up about Thakhek, that is was a major port town on Mekong, lot's of colonial architecture.
So, decided I would ride into town and check it out, then decide next steps. Was sold on staying as soon as I hit the old part of town on the river (across from Thailand) and stumbled upon the Mekong Hotel, something straight out of a Vietnam war era movie scene (I am sure it's been in a few). This is a great little town, on the mighty Mekong, across from Thailand, lot's of good hang-outs in a small area.
A couple of highlights included visiting the MAG visitor center, with it's comprehensive details on the bombing Laos suffered and how it continues to affect the country today, and also meeting Jacky and Daniel, French and French Canadian mates who first met up on the road years ago, and continue to re-connect for some adventure annually - that's the spirit!
Thakhek - the kind of place a person could easily hang out longer, wish I did (but I didn't).
Ride: 109 km | 2 hrs
Stay: Mekong Hotel | $16 | 3/5
