Laos: Vientiane > Na Hin - Thakhek Loop

Nov 24-25 2022 |

Decided to do the Thakhek Loop, the most famous motorcycle trip in Laos, the local equivalent of the Mae Hong Son Loop in Thailand.

The road out of Vientiane was as awful as the road in. Things got more interesting once the route shifted to east to south, and the highway started to run in parallel to the Mekong, the natural border of much of Laos and Thailand. Along the way, one major river converged with the Mekong, more water.

Once I turned off onto the Thakhek Loop for the short drive to Na Hin, it started pouring rain, on a mountain road, covered in leaves - not a good combo. That stretch also passed a very modern viewpoint, where you can get a good view and description of the strange limestone geology that is on display for much of the trip. Oh, and it was freezing.

Booked into the first guesthouse I stopped at. Great homestay run by a family, only two other guests there. The manager was wearing a unique traditional woven hat, not something you see everyday.
