Vietnam: Riding Gear 2024

Apr-May 2024

This was my kit for 1 month in north to central Vietnam.

Luggage

  • Karrimor 70L bag from Sports Direct

  • Pacsafe Dri-lite water-resistant anti-theft backpack: I wore this while riding, attached my GoPro with clip to the shoulder harness

  • Pacsafe Dry Portable Safe: a great slash-proof and lockable bag that can be chained to something secure in your room, this recent model is waterproof

  • Pacsafe sling bag: I carry this as my daily "man purse" (and sometimes take a ribbing for it), usually carried in the Pacsafe Dri-lite when riding

  • Givi magnetic tank bag (taken from a bike abandoned in no-mans-land between Thailand and Cambodia when I was doing a visa run

  • Rok Straps: to strap on Karrimor and my jacket if not wearing

Musings

I saw many foreigners wearing full-on expensive ADV gear (jackets, pants) they had carried top Vietnman; others wearing body armor like shin pads and shoulder pads. In general good shoes, jeans and a long-sleeved shirt may suffice. Aside from avoiding possible road rash, you want to keep out of the sun. Rather than carry your, say, new Klim gear, you'd be better off sourcing a cheap old used moto jacket and take that. In general, it can be very hot, and traffic moves fairly slow. But it depends on your level: I did come across a novice rider who had gone into the ditch on a corner - he was ok, with some scrapes, but was also seriously rattled.
