So here it was: the final leg of my journey around SE Asia that started in mid-Oct. While I was feeling a bit glum about the trip ending, I was also excited to be heading back to Singapore and settling down for a bit. Fortunately, the monotonous multi-day rain had cleared up a bit as I set out for the 1.5 hour ride and it blew by.
While the final destination was Singapore, in reality, I had booked a one-month AirBnB in Forest City, a notorious "ghost city" just across the border in Johor Bahru. And wow, did it exceed expectations: S$570 for a 2-bedroom apartment, in a newish 40-story building, where I was one of a very limited number of residents. The same-sized place in Singapore in a prime locale would be 10x more these days. From Forest City it's a 10-minute ride to the Tuas border crossing, which is really fast (except at times like 7pm on Friday), and then 30 minutes to Singapore CBD. I can't believe more riders in Singapore don't choose to live in Forest City and commute. It's also a duty-free zone, where beer and wine is 50% cheaper than in Singapore!
